The United Methodist Church of Spring Valley Prepares to Celebrate 165th Anniversary

The United Methodist Church of Spring Valley (UMCSV) celebrates a significant milestone this July: 165 years of opening its hearts, minds and doors to the community.

From July 24 – 29, a series of events will mark what began in a small building back in 1853 to what has now become a thriving congregation housed at 2 South Madison Avenue.

Cole’s history of Rockland County states (is this a book?) services were first held in July 1853 in what was known as the Union Sunday school building.  The church’s rich history mentions it was incorporated on August 4, 1859, with the corner stone laid that fall and dedicated the following spring on Metropolitan Avenue in the village. Fifty years later, the church edifice was sold. A new property was purchased on South Jackson Street, extending to South Madison Avenue, and in 1903 the corner stone of the new church was erected on the South Madison side of the property.

It hasn’t always been easy. The Depression of the 1930’s brought such hard times the minister could not be paid.  Improvement was felt after World War II, and post-war baby boom brought new life into the church to the extent that a 100+ children’s Sunday school class meant the church needed to expand.  By the 1950’s, a new area was added to the building to include a nursery and a series of classroom and office space.

Again, a test of faith touched the church as a devastating fire destroyed much of the structure, but not the spirit, in the 1960s.  Rebuilding began almost immediately, and partners in God reached out to assist.  For example, the Temple Bethel church opened its doors to the congregation for Sunday services. The rebuilding also allowed the church to further expand—especially the lower levels and the kitchen area.

Rooted in a time when America was at war within itself over its treatment of one another, the United Methodist Church of Spring Valley has kept unification through God’s grace at its core.  Throughout the 165-year history, a primary goal has been to improve and enrich the lives of the surrounding community.
